This is my most recent large painting (140x120cm), in which there is as much painting as drawing. Yellows and pinks often feature in my work, and it is a question of controlling them, particularly when together on the same canvas. I really enjoy the slushiness of the brush strokes and scratchy line-making movement. It is also about the shapes created by the spaces and shadows between the lines.
Drawing and painting are of equal significance in my practice. My approach is intuitive and as my work hovers between the abstract and figurative, an added mark or swish of colour can take it to a different place. Often in my work there is a kind of primordial narrative, even though I don’t know how it will manifest itself as the piece develops.
